How to Get to Mal País, Costa Rica

Driving from San José Airport (SJO) via Puntarenas and Paquera
From Juan Santamaría International Airport, drive toward Puntarenas to take the Naviera Tambor ferry to Paquera. Allow approximately 1.5–2 hours for the drive, depending on traffic, plus extra time for collecting your rental car and boarding the ferry.
Step 1: Drive to the Puntarenas Ferry Terminal
San Jose International (SJO) > Puntarenas Ferry
Waze: Navigate to Naviera Tambor, Puntarenas — uses the driver’s current location.
Step 2: Take the Ferry to Paquera
Choose the Puntarenas → Paquera crossing when booking. Purchase a ticket for your vehicle and each person travelling, including the driver.
Book ahead where possible, especially during holidays. Follow the arrival instructions on your ticket; the online booking service currently asks passengers to arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before departure.
The route commonly uses the Route 27 toll highway. Allow extra travel time during busy periods.

Step 3: Drive from Paquera to Mal País
From the Paquera ferry terminal, drive toward Cóbano, then continue to Mal País. Allow approximately 1.5 hours to reach Pacific Azure Vacation Rentals, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Follow the map below to Pacific Azure. As you approach, look for Delizie Italian Bakery & Kitchen in Mal País, then follow these final directions:
- After passing Delizie, take the first left onto the Mal País–Cabuya road.
- Take the first right onto Calle Lailas.
- Continue approximately 200 meters (650 feet), following the road’s gentle S-shaped curve.
- Look on your left for a small white sign with “Pacific Azure” in blue marking the entrance.

Driving from Liberia International Airport (LIR) to Mal País
Liberia International Airport (LIR) is a convenient alternative for reaching Mal País, with no ferry crossing required. Allow approximately four hours to drive to Pacific Azure through the Nicoya Peninsula, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Flying from San José (SJO) to Cóbano Airport (ACO)
Spend less time traveling and more time enjoying Mal País. A short domestic flight from San José to Cóbano offers a convenient alternative to the drive and ferry crossing.
